How do I choose a Psychotherapist / Counsellor?
When considering working with a psychotherapist or counsellor, it is important to confirm that they are accredited by or registered with a recognised governing body or professional association. This ensures they have sufficient training and expertise, and are professionally and ethically accountable. I am registered and accredited with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) and I am also a member of The Foundation for Psychotherapy and Counselling (FPC). Both of these organisations have strict guidelines for ethics and codes of conduct which I abide by. You can see further details of my qualifications and experience here.
Of course, it is also important to find a therapist you feel you can trust and work well with. For this reason, I hold an initial consultation to discuss what your reason for coming to seek help is, eg anxiety, depression or family / relationship issues, what you are hoping to achieve with psychotherapy and whether you want to attend psychotherapy in person or make use of the online therapy options. It also gives you time to consider whether I am someone you would like to work with. After that we would meet every week at the same time for 50 minute sessions.
How long does Counselling or Psychotherapy take?
The time frame tends to reflect the material you bring. The longer you have struggled with difficulties the more likely it is that open-ended long term psychotherapy will be the most helpful, as those difficulties will be fairly deep-rooted. However, if your difficulties are more easily identifiable, like a recent bereavement or a specific anxiety, then short-term focused psychotherapy can be invaluable. This is something that we will talk about in our initial session as it's important that we agree the best way to proceed.
Where do the therapy sessions take place?
I conduct face-to-face sessions in person at consulting rooms in Hampstead, NW3. I also offer telephone and online therapy via Zoom, Skype and FaceTime.
***** NB: As of March 20th 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and government guidelines, I am conducting telephone and online therapy sessions only. *****
